What the Law Says
Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, all dogs in public places in the UK must wear a collar with a tag (or similar device) that clearly displays certain information. This applies whether your dog is microchipped or not.
There are some exceptions to working dogs.
Failure to comply is a criminal offence and can result in a fine of up to £5,000.
What Information Must Be on the Tag? The law states the following:
Your full name (or surname and initials)
Your address (house number/name and postcode are sufficient)
Most people will also try and squeeze a phone number on there making it quite difficult to read as most tags are just engraved on one side leaving very little space.
